He opened a small box to show her a pair of gold shafts stuck through a satin pillow. Each held a horseshoe-shaped loop dangling like a door knocker.
A jolting thrill went through Meili—one that was so telling and inappropriate, she fought revealing it. She knew exactly what those were, and, if he was offering them as a gift, she would be hard-pressed to refuse. Her middle was suddenly inhabited by thousands of silkworms, all spinning and wriggling with excitement.
Struggling to hold an impassive expression, she looked up inquiringly.
“You were piercing someone’s nose when I had my stitches out. Will you put these on me?” He nodded at the box.
